What is Sustainable Rum?
Sustainable rum will have an eco-friendly ethos. Steps to reduce emissions, water waste and energy consumption will have been taken in the farming of the sugar cane, distilling the rum and packaging of the final product.
Traditionally, rum has a high environmental impact. This is because it uses a lot of land to grow the cane, heat to convert the raw sugar cane into a fermentable product and large quantities of water used and wasted, not to mention the packaging resources.
However, sustainable rum brands will find ways to reduce their carbon footprint, heat and energy consumption as well as find eco-friendly packaging.
